由佐治魯卡斯執導《星球大戰 Star Wars》是1997年一部史詩式科幻電影，當年橫掃全球票房超過四億，打破史提芬史匹堡的《大白鯊 Jaw》留下的紀錄躋身票房冠軍。
不久，佐治魯卡斯再開拍續集電影《帝國反擊戰The Empire Strikes Back》 (1980年) 及《武士復仇Return of the Jedi》 (1983年)，組成星球大戰三部曲。
除了商業成就，這三部電影獲得業界讚譽，其故事敍述、角色塑造、視覺特技和原創音樂均行業帶來新沖擊。美國作曲家John Williams 為三部電影擔任配樂創作。他運用優美旋律，配合管弦樂演奏，緊扣緊湊的劇情，令電影配樂深入人心。《星球大戰 Star Wars》是上世紀美國流行文化的成功例子。電影與配樂完美結合， 對日後電影配樂的發展別具影響深遠。在 2005 年，《星球大戰 Star Wars》的電影配樂被美國電影學會American Film Institute選為歷來最佳電影配樂。
